The oldest community in Will County, Illinois, Plainfield celebrated its quasquicentennial in 2002. North and south parts of the village were incorporated on June 30, 1877; parts of what would become Plainfield were settled in the early 1820s and included a settlement originally known as Walker's Grove. In the 2000 Census, the village recorded 13,038 residents; as of October 2002, the estimated population is 17,000.
Among the village's claims to fame is the creation of the ice cream sundae; it is claimed that a Plainfield druggist first served ice cream with syrup to his customers using the name Sonntag (his surname), which was later translated from German to "Sunday" and then "sundae." It was also the original home of a college that later relocated to nearby Naperville and became North Central College.
The Village of Plainfield maintains an official web site; additional information about the community can be obtained through the Plainfield Area Chamber of Commerce (although the Web site was temporarily shut for renovation as of April 2003).
